The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement (APLB) is proud to share that our President, Colleen Rolland, and Vice President, Dr. Michelle Crossley, have co-authored a chapter in a pioneering new book by Brazilian psychologists Juliana Kawano Sato, an alumna of the APLB’s Pet Loss Grief Specialist Training, and Louisanne Agnes “Sennyey” Sanchez.
Their chapter, “Meeting the Needs of Pet Grief: How One Organization Fosters Healing After Loss,” has been published in both Portuguese and English in Luto no Contexto da Medicina Veterinária (Mourning in the Context of Veterinary Medicine), released by Lucto Editora. The book explores bereavement and mental health within the field of veterinary medicine — a topic of growing global importance.
Colleen and Dr. Crossley were invited to contribute to this groundbreaking project just over a year ago and are deeply honored to have participated in such a meaningful and timely initiative. Their contribution reflects APLB’s ongoing commitment to supporting those affected by pet loss and advancing compassionate care for both pet families and the professionals who serve them.
As Juliana Kawano Sato writes:
“The work is unprecedented in Brazil and brings together contributions from psychologists, veterinarians, and other specialists, showing that grief care is a multiprofessional responsibility. More than a book, this project is an invitation to recognize grief as an essential part of mental health in the PetVet universe—legitimizing pain, strengthening bonds, and opening paths for transformation.”
The APLB congratulates Juliana and Louisanne for their vision and dedication in leading this important conversation in Brazil, and we are honored to stand alongside them in bringing greater awareness to the emotional wellbeing of those in veterinary care.
