The Flourishing Way

Hi, I’m Liz. I specialize in helping people navigate the profound grief that comes with losing a beloved animal.

I know firsthand that the loss of a pet can be devastating. Animals are family, companions, sources of comfort, and part of our everyday lives for years. When they die, the emptiness they leave behind can be enormous—and yet, pet loss is often misunderstood or minimized by others.

After losing my cat, Kio, who had been part of my life for 19 years, I sought therapy to help me process my grief. I continued to cry for months, only to be told that it was time to “get over” her. That experience stayed with me. I realized how difficult it can be to find someone who truly understands that grief over an animal is real grief and that there is no set timeline for when you should be finished mourning.

I experienced that same profound grief and confusion again when I unexpectedly had to make the decision to put my dog down at the veterinarian after 14 years together. Losing an animal can involve not only sadness, but also guilt, second-guessing, anger, loneliness, and the painful adjustment to life without a companion who was woven into your daily routine.

You don’t have to minimize your loss because someone else doesn’t understand it. You don’t have to justify why you’re still hurting, and you don’t have to rush through your grief.

My goal is to provide a space where you can talk openly about your animal, your relationship with them, the circumstances surrounding their death, and everything you’re experiencing afterward. Whether you’re struggling with the decision to say goodbye, coping with an unexpected loss, feeling stuck in grief months later, or simply trying to figure out how to move forward while still missing them, you don’t have to go through it alone.

My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based therapy. I believe grief isn’t something we simply “get over.” Instead, therapy can help you process the loss, make room for the emotions that come with it, and find a way to carry the relationship and memories forward while beginning to build a life that feels meaningful again.

Losing an animal you love can hurt deeply because the relationship mattered deeply. I understand that—and I’m here to help you through it.
