Bruce, Our Sweet Boy
Universally loved, described as “the sweetest and most dog-like cat I’ve ever met”
He was our Sweet boy, my fiance and I mourn your loss, and are thankful for the time we were able to spend with you.
Bruce was the sweetest, most tolerant cat I ever met. He had a habit of chewing wires as a kitten which he mercifully grew out of. He never complained even when I know I was bothering him, brushing his long coat and holding him in awkward positions. He never kissed, nipped or swatted at anyone or anything.
Bruce was a kitten when he was adopted from a shelter. I went with my mom to donate some old blankets and towels when a cage full of kittens caught my attention. One in particular, you, Bruce, with your sweet eyes and polite meow, seemed to be speaking directly to me. You seemed too young to be adopted. But I learned you were part of a litter found after mom had been hit by a car.
We have gone a long way together, from bottle feeds, de-worming treatment, boyfriends that didn’t work out, college, jobs, etc. You have always been there for me.
We often called you a “lap adjacent cat”. You often did not want to sit on mine or anyone’s lap or be on them in any way directly. But you would always be nearby. Sometimes on a stool or a perch next to me. Or on the couch next to me with a paw, a leg or a tail draped over me. That was enough for both of us.
You have always been a crowd pleaser. You made friends anywhere, anyone that came over fell in love with you. I joked that you.would make a terrible guard cat because you would be swayed by food and back rubs. Even when we had 40-50 people over for barbecues you didn’t fret, you would politely make an entrance, say hello, make everyone love you and leave when it got too loud or overstimulating.
I somehow just thought you would always be there. I hope you know you were loved every minute of every day. Between my fiance and I there was no shortage of love for you. I hope you felt it.
My deepest regret is not seeing possible warning signs that I wrote off as you getting older. I fear you may have been in pain and I did not see it or properly address it. Perhaps you moving a little less, eating a little less, being a little pickier about food were signs I missed. Your rapid transition to the other side sent us all reeling, and what would kill me more than you leaving is the thought that you suffered in any way.
I just hope you know that you are deeply loved and deeply missed. You mean the world to me.
