My Life with You
They say that when you get older, the world starts to shrink. But for me, at eleven years old, my world finally opened up the day I found you.
When I first arrived at your home, I was a bundle of nerves. I didn’t know how to be still. I didn’t know if I was allowed to rest, or if this safety was just a temporary thing. My past had taught me to be ready for the ground to shift under my feet, so I stayed close, hovering, trying to understand this new rhythm.
But you were patient. You saw past the nervousness, past the old anxieties, and you gave me the one thing I had been missing: a constant presence. You didn’t leave me behind; you took me everywhere.
I became your shadow. I watched you work, I sat by your feet in the garden, and I walked beside you through the days, letting the scent of the earth and the sound of your voice wash over me. In those years, I wasn’t just a “rescue dog.” I was a partner. I was home.
As time went on, my body started to slow down, and things became a bit harder for me. But even when sickness came, I wasn’t afraid. You were always right there, adjusting your life to make sure I was comfortable, easing my pain with your steady, gentle touch. You gave me a softness in my final days that I never imagined possible when I was still behind those shelter bars.
I left this world peacefully because I had finished my work. I had lived fully, I had been truly seen, and I had been deeply loved.
If you look for me, don’t look back at the shelter. Look for me in the garden where we sat, on the paths we walked, and in the quiet moments of your day. I am the peace in your heart, the one who finally learned what it meant to belong.
Thank you for choosing me. Thank you for the last four years. I couldn’t have asked for a better life.
