What is Pet Loss Grief Support?

Losing a beloved pet is one of the most excruciating experiences humans endure, and no one should have to go through it alone – as our Founder, Dr. Wallace Sife, knew all too well.

That’s because pets are family. The bond we share with them is unbreakable – rooted in unconditional love, cherished daily rituals, and a deep sense of connection. When they die, the relationship changes, and the grief that follows can be profound, complex, and overwhelming.

And yet, despite their incredible importance in our lives, this grief is often misunderstood or minimized. Many people find themselves navigating loss without the support, language, or recognition they need and deserve – without the words or understanding to make sense of what they’re experiencing. This is known as disenfranchised grief – grief that is not fully acknowledged or supported.

Pet loss grief support exists to change that – ensuring that no one has to walk this difficult path alone. It offers compassionate guidance, resources, and community to help individuals process their grief, honor their animals, and feel seen and heard at every stage of the journey.

Because pet loss happens in stages, we are here for you before, during, and after.

Anticipatory bereavement – the experience of caring for a sick, injured, or aging pet, especially when they are facing a condition from which they will not recover – can bring pain, confusion, sadness, fear, uncertainty, and the weight of difficult decisions, all while continuing to show up for your pet with the utmost love and care. Saying goodbye itself is one of the hardest moments we face.

And in the space that follows, grief can take many forms – sorrow, guilt, relief, longing, or even isolation – often arriving in waves and without a clear path forward.

That’s why our team – including trained Pet Loss Grief Specialists (PLGSs) and dedicated professionals, all of whom have loved and lost pets of their own – is here for you, helping to create space for healing, hope, and a way forward.
