Stella loved food, and because of her cleverness and persuasive personality, it was always difficult to stay mad at some of the things we remember her doing that were bad. There were two significant memories we have of Stella and her love of food.
Daddy and the Lasagna
Stella loved watching daddy eat, especially when he eats nachos or pizza. One day mommy told daddy to watch Stella as she did laundry in the basement and warned him about Stella’s ability to jump very high and climbing chairs with the lasagna for dinner on the kitchen table. Daddy was confident about Stella’s good behavior lately, and decided to go to the washroom leaving her unsupervised. Not even five minutes later after using the washroom, Daddy saw Stella on top of the kitchen table scarfing down the lasagna whole. Daddy and Stella both panicked as they locked eyes and noticed what each other did wrong. Stella panicked first as as she saw daddy coming towards her, so she tried swallowing the whole lasagna at once. Daddy became frustrated in his panic that he immediately called for an appointment to see the vet which was only few minutes away from the old house. Lucky enough, the vet was able to see Stella right away and was able to induce her tummy to get the whole lasagna out in one piece (literally). Stella ended up eating rice and chicken to settle her tummy instead for that night with some meds. And as a result of what happened, daddy learned his lesson as well.
Pizza and Breadsticks
One day we decided to trust that Stella and her brother Bronson would be okay together roaming the house on their own by leaving their kennel gates open while mommy and daddy leave the house for work for the day. We set the camera we can view from work to face the kitchen just to make sure they were behaving at home. Suddenly around noon and checking the camera, we saw Stella jump very high from the kitchen floor to the oven and using her paw was able to swat the pizza box we placed on top of the oven to fall over. It was one of those $5 bucks, $5 bucks deal from Pizza Hut too. As soon as she was caught doing this, we remember using the intercom function of the camera to let her know that she was caught and immediately she became confused and ran off towards her kennel when she heard mommy’s voice. When mommy and daddy got home that day, the kitchen floor was a mess. Left over pizza, breadsticks, and chocolate chip cookie crumbs everywhere. Stella knew she was in trouble so she stayed in her kennel for majority of the evening, especially after dinner. When it was time for bed, daddy was just about to lay down in the master bedroom and fluffing his pillows, from the kitchen can be heard telling mommy that he found 2 breadsticks buried underneath his pillow. It appeared that Stella hid two of them there to save for later.
Stella was a beautiful Puggle X (35% Bulldog, 34% Pug, 15% Bull Terrier, and 18% Staffordshire Bull terrier). She was a rescue that came into the Winnipeg Humane Society on July 16, 2016. The humane society estimated that she was about 2.5 years old when she came in. Stella spent about 2-7 days stray after escaping her owner’s yard to scavenge for food by herself in the rain before someone made a call to inform the humane society about her wellbeing.
On August 16, 2016, and on the lookout for another dog to join our pack, we found Stella on Petfinder.com and decided to pursue adoption. It was love at first sight. Stella was perfect for our family and immediately she fit right in. There were trials and tribulations we faced together as a family when it came to obedience training, but over the years, Stella was able to conquer her bad habits and became a very good girl. Stella had a friendly and sociable demeanour. She always knew how to bring comfort in the room when somebody was having a bad day or was sad about something. She was the perfect companion anyone would want to have by their side. Stella loved going for walks and the outdoors. She lived a full life getting to go for walks, travelling with the family at the lake, and spending time with everyone at different family events.
Unlike her brother Bronson, who can sometimes be picky and snobby, Stella had a very calm, and grateful-for-everything type of personality. She was always happy about everything and this always showed in her excitement about new toys, food or snacks. Whenever Bronson would become picky either by turning away certain foods or not finish his food, or snacks, Stella will wait for a signal from either mommy or daddy before swooping in to eat his leftovers.
Stella was diagnosed with cancer on August 2, 2023 at the age of 8.5 years old. Two weeks later August 19, 2023 she made it 9, and was able to meet the whole family including Lola, Vavo, Uncle Danny, Uncle Rico, Tito Bryan, Tito Aries, and the rest of the Sousa/Salangsang extended family who showed up and got to see Stella one last time, before she could spend the next couple of months privately with her parents and fur-brother to say farewell and goodbye. Stella is at peace and with God now, and Mommy, Daddy, and Bronson will always remember her in their hearts and minds forever.
When you love someone so much with all of your heart, it is challenging and difficult to heal from the pain of losing them, especially when you are not ready to let them go. Even though our hearts will forever be broken without Stella’s presence in our home anymore, we will thrive moving forward with the good memories we treasure of her. Stella was the best rescue dog we ever had and in her legacy will continue to rescue and love more animals just like her. Stella is forever loved by the Sousa and Salangsang Family. Loving you forever and always from Mommy Celna, Daddy Marco, and fur-Brother Bronson.
Stella has now joined her fur-cousins Gerald, Foxcee, Nuno, Leo, and Sheika in heaven. Run free little angels!
Thank you Stella for teaching us compassion, how to love and forgive unconditionally. You will always be forever in our hearts and mind. Tatay and Pai will take care of you with God now, and we will all see each other again soon. We love you forever and ever.
